Day 10 – Kyoto

The Golden Pavilion

Day 10 – Kyoto

Japan, not only a mega-busy city that thrives on electronics and efficiency, actually has an almost sacred appreciation of nature. One must travel outside of Tokyo to truly experience the ‘old Japan’ and more importantly feel these aspects of Japanese culture.

Last day in Kyoto and following the last couple of days, we thought we would take it a little easy. With the time we had left there was little reason killing ourselves, it just leaves a few to see next time. We were tossing up whether to see the Kiyomizudera Temple but time and weather wasn’t really on our side. We weren’t real sure what was going to eventuate (weather wise) so we went with the Golden Pavilion.

I had visited the Kinkakuji Temple on my first visit to Japan but Tracy had never been so it really was a no-brainer. With a couple of things going wrong here, it was nice to go with the “safe bet” and I wasn’t too far off the mark J The sun came out and the pavilion played it’s part in putting on a show. The temperature was a little down on the last few days but still no rain. Walking around the grounds really is special and it’s nice to be able to share the experience with someone. It was a bit of a hike to get out here from where we are staying and we weren’t in too much of a rush to be honest. Like Kyoto itself, the site is steeped in history and really typifies what the city is about.

Our last stop for the day was a viewing of the “illuminations”. Imogen told us about it’s existence and we decided to hop on a bus and have a look see. While it wasn’t that expansive (Blackpool has nothing to worry about with this one), it was really quite nice and contained in one area. Tomorrow is a an earlier start so it was back to the hotel to pack and get our stuff together. Next stop will be Nagano and our second longest train trip of the journey. More on that in the next instalment J
